DEATH DOULA
There are many ways a Death Doula can offer support during the dying process and each plan of care is as unique as each individual. Death Doulas can offer emotional support to both the dying person and their loved ones, providing a safe space for expressing fears or desires. They help to facilitate spiritual support or rituals based on each person’s beliefs. Death Doulas can empower an individual or family by educating them with information about the dying process or advocating for their wishes and preferences, ensuring that their voice is respected and acknowledged. Support might also look like helping to facilitate a legacy project, coordinating communication and support among family and health care providers, finding bereavement support, or ensuring the necessary paperwork is in place and records are kept. Each person's journey is unique and the services and relationship will look different depending on one's needs.
It is important to note that a Death Doula does NOT take the place of a medical professional. They take a holistic approach when supporting a patient and serve as a companion, treating individuals with compassion, dignity and respect while helping to navigate the physical, emotional, spiritual and practical domains of death.
